Turnout Signals

David who models HO asks readers:

“I went to DCC on my train setup. I want to have a signal to let me know when the turnout is not on main track. Can anyone advise me on doing this?”

Small electrical switches are available to attach under turnouts, which can be used to turn on a light or other indicator. Get these from the track/turnout manufacturer as part of their accessory range.

Yeah there’s a block detection unit from digitrax I think. But there is also another system that you can install but I can’t remember the mfg but I know it’s an independent system that works off infrared but I can’t think of it. The systems all are independent systems that can actually guard your R.O.W. without having to have a set you can do it with only one or two. Just Google “HO scale signals and go from there. I hope this helps you out some

  • Guillermo Patterson, from the Patagonia Argentina says:

Hi David. My turnouts are electrofrog. As the frog changes polarity with the position, I have connected a led between the frog and each of the stock rails, via 1K resistors in series with each led. Depending on the position of the switch, one or the other of the LEDs will light up.

I hope you understand my english

I have come across a company called Azatrax. They make IR detectors that can work with switches and light a signal. Check them out.
