Loco Made Using a Stanton Drive 4 Wheel Truck and Dummy

Stanton drive model railwaysReader Robert models HO and asks this question:

“I have made a loco using a Stanton drive 4 wheel truck and dummy. It runs OK on the flat or running up grade, when descending grades it runs with a very jerky motion. Any suggestions on how to remedy the problem?”

I am running DC not DCC.

I think the problem of jerky action while descending grades may be due to the gears. I have many locomotives that will do the same jerking while descending grades. I have found that it is because of the back pressure placed on the gears, causing them more friction, especially worm type gears. The gears will start to bind with the excess weight pushing on the gears. This doesn’t happen with the other gear types, only the worm gears. I have no solutions for this problem. The worm gears do require some amount of “Play” to function, and the grade back pressure on the gears reduces the play, and causes binding.

Thanks Jay. I have solved the problem by converting this loco into a shunter so no grades to descend in my yard!!
