Fixing Turnout Switch Failures

Ed who models HO scale asks readers:

“I am having problems with the switches pressed to actuate a turnout.  I’m finding them staying stuck in the depressed condition causing the turnout motor to melt.  Does anyone else see this problem.  Its happened to me enough times to get expensive.”

Firstly I would fit a simple on/off kill switch between your power source and the points so if you notice a problem you can cut the power before any damage occurs. Secondly I would use a passing contact switch such as the Hornby Railways R044 that doesn’t rely on a spring to reset. It only activates the point motor when you move the lever.
