Using Hard or Soft Pastels for Weathering

weathering chalksGordon asks readers:

“I looking at buying some pastels for weathering and I saw some advertised as soft acrylic pastics, some are described as hard pastels and some say chalk. I’m just not sure which is best for weathering plastic, wood, and card buildings and the track. I’ve also heard that people apply Dullcoat first so the pastels have some to grip to. Is that right, or would a simple paint base coat do the same?”

From my experience I find that a flat, dull finish is best for the weathering base. If your model has a shiny finish, dull coat it.

Once the weathering is done, I would give it another hit of dull coat so the weathering doesn’t come off when handling the model.

Dale has great advice .. I use art pastel chalks … either direct and rub or shave and apply with a brush … for me either method works well .. good luck
