Auto Reversing Module

Gopal from India models N scale and has this question:

“I hope someone can help me in getting AUTO REVERSING/FORWARD module with a pause of few seconds for my ROCO N scale train outlay. Please help. Thanks”

Do you mean that train moves in one (say forward) direction, halt at some point, pause for few seconds, move in reverse direction, halt at some point, pause for few seconds, moves in reverse (now again forward) direction and repeat for preset times or till stopped manually?

If this is the case, I am not aware of any ready made solution. However, it can be implemented by using few digital logic and timer ICs with position sensors/ switches and relays. It can also be done by using a Arduino (or any other microcontroller) development board with position sensors/ switches and relays.

In case you are capable of doing electronic hardware/ programming, it is fine. Otherwise, you may find a friend or electronics hobby club nearby and get the solution.

Other fellow forum members may also have some information.

There are automatic reversing modules for model railroads. They will reverse the train direction at adjustable intervals. On a straight track, a diode connecting one isolated rail at each end will stop the train at each end until the polarity reverses.

There are also automatic pause units for stopping and starting a train at a station, which have a sensor to detect when the train reaches the station. All available from model shops etc.
