Identity of an AF Die Cast Locomotive

Edward has this question for readers:

“I’ve been offered an S scale Die Cast Locomotive. They say it is Atlantic 300. But it has 6 main wheels, none in the front, and none in the back. But the cowcatcher is extended more than average and it has a coupling like a switcher. The body resembles a 342 Switcher. But the 342 switcher has 8 main wheels. And there is no e unit in boiler. Can someone help me identify it please?”

I would like to see a picture. Do you know the age of the loc? To my knowledge some were brass. I would need more information too.

  • Richard B. Walter says:

AF locos had reverse units in the tender. You’re missing lead and trailing trucks.

Sounds like an American flyer engine. They were S scale. They did not use an e unit. It must be an 0-6-0 switcher. They were made by AC Gilbert company. They are no longer in business but the lionel train company bought them out and sells their models. Hope this helps you.

Yes, it sounds like an American Flyer 0-6-0 switcher or mabe a Pacific without the lead and trailing trucks. Need to see a photo to be sure.
