Ideas for Desert Scene Wanted
Morgan is looking for ideas and inspiration from experienced railroaders:
“I am planning a totally false HO model rr. It is the PRR in west TX. Now, the layout is shelf, and minimal scenery. But, has anyone experience with modeling the desert/mountain area of west TX? What is the best ballast to use? What colors of paint should I buy and where can I get pictures of the tracks out there? I live near DFW and can’t get to the west. Don’t drive anymore, etc. Best of all would be pictures of your model rr with that type of scenery. Thanks.”

Hi Morgan I have added a photo of my desert scene i used a light tan fine builders sand for the desert and fine gray ballast on the track hope this is helpful for you.
Thanks Kevin It sure helps a lot. What brand or company makes the “fine builders sand” and “fine gray ballast”? Where to buy it? Specifics so I know what to look for exactly. And that’s a great looking layout you have!
The fins grey ballast is from Scenic Express at our local hobby store and the fine builders sand we got from a builder friend but i think most hardware builders supply store should sell it. thanks for your comment the hills are plaster over a cardboard trellis system and and old net curtain. the rocks are hand carved into the plaster. the layout is DCC and has 34 1200 x 600 modules Most of the main line is single track with passing loops and it is a point to point operation that requires 6 operators.
