Hornby 08 Shunter With Sound Problem

“I model British Rail in OO gauge and have a Hornby 08 Shunter that is giving me problems. When I operate it with the sound switched on it stops and starts back up then just repeats itself over. When I run it minus the sound it works fine. What can I do please?”

Do a factory reset on the decoder. This will not harm the decoder and will only have to reset the address from 3.
In my experience the problem is with Hornby, their locos are very poor quality compared to the majority of locos on the market for the same price. Their chips are also quite lacking, changing the DCC chip may help.
It looks like the decoder is facing a short (perhaps caused by the speaker wiring?) or overheating, then the protection circuit cuts the power to the sound components, then automaticaly rearms but short again and so on.
It may be caused (also) by an inadequate speaker (too low or too high impedance). I would suggest you take the loco to your local dealer service, if you are not familiarized with electronics,
