Bachmann 0-6-0 Noise Problems

Sorry can’t help you. I have asked Bachmann in the past for a diagram of different engines to help me repair older engines without getting any help from them. As for engines in general if you do take it apart to clean, replace or repair, then I strongly suggest you make notes as to where a part came from and how it came out to help you put it back together. I also suggest that you find a box to put your engine or rolling stock with about 2 inch lip around the box (like to the top of a shoe box) what ever size you want (12×18) is good. I find that I have plenty of room to work and a better chance of not having small parts fly off or roll off to the floor! Good luck to you.
Working in a box sounds a good idea in an effort to stop parts from migrating to the middle of next week. Jeweler wear an apron that attaches to the front of their works space for the same reason.
Have you tried a drop of Labelle 106 lubricant?
Older Bachmann steam locomotives were what is known as “split chassis” design. These have nylon axles and drive gear, which over time and with the use of incorrect lubricants, split. Check your wheel back to back measurements are correct.
If you have the skills, strip the entire mechanism, clean all parts. Lubricate bearings, clean all electrical contact surfaces,
When reassembling rotate the mechanism slowly to see if there are worn or bent parts, ensure everything is correctly aligned.
To make sure everything goes back in the right place, take photos at every stage.
Speaking from long experience, I second the idea of working on a tray or in a box to avoid losing springs that ping out !
Hi Ross you did not tell us if it is an old split chassis or if it a new one 0-6-0 Side tank Porter. If it is an old model… try to see the quarters, if they are 90º apart from the other side. Those old gears give big problems, and aren´t no more avilable, I think. Another point you could check is the valve gear and driving rods have clearance from the connecting rods. Sometimes with handling these rods can be bent inwards and foul each other. I have had this problem with old tri-ang steam locos.
