How To Make Large Blue Backdrops

Steve models HO and writes:

“I see the large blue backdrops with the curved corners at the ends of the model tables instead of just a sharp corner. I originally thought of just using a piece of 6 mm floor underlayment 4 x 8 foot cut in half lengthwise to 2 foot and screwing these strips on the back of my table. But now I would like to make the taller curved backdrops. Is this material cardboard or what is it made of to make it curve like that Wood without being too stiff and porous? Can you buy these blue backdrops already made and decorated?”

The one time I had a large backdrop I used 0.06 inch (1.5 mm) thick sheet styrene. It’s thin enough to bend easily and can be cut to size. Mine was 14 inches high and about 40 inches long. Fortunately, I was able to find a plastics supplier (unfortunately no longer in business) who cut it for me from a 2×4 foot piece. Remember, if it is more than about 12 inches in height you should be sure to brace it.

There is stuff called flexi ply, bendy ply or wacky wood. It is a 2 ply flexible plywood. I haven’t used on my layout but I used to make the arched roof for my cats condo.

Masonite works well, it’s cheep and bends well. Same for 1/4 inch foam. The higher you go the more you will have to support it. Mine is mostly against the wall, for the corners I use the foam to make the bends. I cover it all with butcher paper and spray paint that. Water colors and air brush work just great !
