NCE 0010 Pro Cab Deluxe Master Cab Handheld Remote and Bachmann 66801 HO Scale EMD GP38 2 DCC Santa FeNewbie Martin is looking at HO scale and asks:

“Just starting off I will build two tracks code 100 seems the most commonly available? I like the look of the Bachmann 66801 HO Scale EMD GP38 2 DCC Santa Fe, so might make it my first engine. Tell me if there’s something more suitable.

My plan is to operate DCC for engines, accessories, lighting, etc. I presume a wireless throttle is the way to go? I haven’t committed to buy anything or any particular make yet, so would appreciate any suggestions? I noticed several ads for the NCE Pro Cab – any good? A lot of questions I know, but I am just trying to get my head around things before committing.”

    Hey Martin,
    Welcome to the hobby!

    Code 100 track is abundantly available and is a good place to start. Your choice of engine, when just getting into the hobby, is whatever you fancy. If, on the other hand you intend to run a prototypical railroad, then some consideration should be made in regard to the type of road and era you are modeling. I am not a fan of bachmann engines myself but do have one that runs well and they are relatively inexpensive so they won’t break the bank. As for DCC systems, I have used the NCE PowerCab for the past 4 years and its fine as it is for my road. The system is easy and intuitive and excellent for beginners. Furthermore, the NCE system is easily expandable and can grow as your railroad grows. It supports wireless throttles as well as advanced consisting for prototypical operations.

    I trust this helps!

    Martin;
    Hope you have an enjoyable time in this hobby.
    Ditto to everything Lou said.

    Martin,
    I use the North Coast Engineering (NCE) power cab and I’m really happy with it. It also integrates nicely with more advanced systems to throw switches or automate train control, which you may get into in the future. I also have a 5 AMP booster from NCE so I can run several trains (consists) at one time. Have fun in this hobby. It’s very addictive.

    I suggest for a beginner, visit model railroad shows and chat with the operators, visit local model railroad clubs, maybe get a couple of books on layout concepts and building.

    There are so many different kinds of layout, themes, scales, etc, it is good to see a wide range before you commit to one idea.

    And study to get a good grasp of basic electricity and electronics, this will save you a lot of problems !

    As above, I also have NCE and the club I belong to runs with NCE. User friendly. welcome. I have a wireless procab for use at the club and a power cab for home.

  • Geoff says:

    I like nce. Wether you need the wireless version or the corded version really depends on the size of your layout, and how much you need to move around. Btw, the 0010 is not the wireless version of the procab. I have a corded powercab, and it’s perfect for my layout, I can reach everywhere I need to be without unplugging.
