Old O Scale Marx Model 709 Train Transformer Issue

Dale posted:

“I am currently renovating an older Marx train set. I get a weaker response the farther I get from the transformer connection. The set has a Marx Model 709 Train Transformer. I am wondering if I need to replace this transformer? If so… should I replace it with a 709 transformer, or should I change to a different transformer for additional power? If I should replace it…. any recommendations?”

  • Dick Walter says:

A bit of electricity is lost at each track joint. Attach a lockon at a point farthest from your power pack and wire it to the transformer posts you’re already using. This should solve your problem. Certainly tighten all the track joints.

  • Frank B says:

What you are experiencing is normal for every basic train set !

As Dick says, when electric current is going through the track to the loco, you lose voltage through the resistance of each rail section and in each rail join, particularly if there is rust or corrosion on the joiners or rail ends.

Therefore you need to run an additional power cable to the far side of the track loop, in parallel with the main feed from the transformer to the track. Make sure you keep the correct rail polarity.

Also clean rail tops, loco wheel rims and wheel/axle pickup springs to maintain good contact.
