Buzza writes:

“I am not a fan of plastic and thought about using real treated timber cross ties. Has anyone done this? Are there any issues? Where can I get them in HO? Would love some feedback.”

    Buzza,
There are manufacturers that produce real wood ties for model railroading. You will have to hand lay your track but it is possible to do. An internet search will provide you with options.

Please remember that Creosote and Copper Arsenic used to treat timber are pollutants and carcogenic, not the mention just plain poisonous. For indoor layouts use the suppliers suggested above. For outdoors you might not have much choice if you want them to last more that 10 years. In Oz the termites will eat them with relish within a couple of months untreated.

They make tie stain that is safe to use on wood ties. There are several companies that make plain and stained tie of different widths and thickness

  • phil johnson says:

Wood ties are available in different widths and thickness. Tie stains are also available.
