Engine Wheel Traction

Roger asks this question about engine wheel traction.

“I have some older (more than 25 years) engines that had rubber ‘O’ rings on the traction wheels. The traction wheels had a recessed area where the rubber rings would ‘snap’ into place. I have been to my local hobby shop and searched through the Walthers 2008 Model Railroaders Reference book, and I can’t find them anywhere. Are there any suggestions from your readers? By the way…thank you, so much for putting this blog up on the Internet. I’ve been wanting to ask many questions, but, did not know who to ask or where to look. Thanks, Again!!”

Both Roco and Marklin supply pare tyres which will fit on older locos. I have used them successfully even on Hornby Dublo (40 years old). You just need to do a bit of homework to match wheel diameters.

You can find traction tires at CMR Industries Inc. in Richmond BC Canada. You can find them on the net. The parts are made by Roco and come in different sizes. They look odd when you look at them, but they will flatten out when mounted. You may have to use 2 on each wheel as I had to do. But they work and are relatively inexpensive. The shipping is the killer. But if you need other things, it is not that bad.

A few weeks ago I was on a “mission” and was at “D & S Hobby Shop” in Beverly Hills, Fla. and I saw that they have what you need. you can call them Mon-Fri. 10-6 and Sat 10 – 2 at 352 527 1500
    hope this helps, Will Matevich
