Lighting a Building On A RR Layout

Jim has a question for readers on lighting a window in a building on his layout:

“I have two model railroading problems to overcome. Firstly, I have a building on my layout that I want to be a showroom. I am making a rv showroom. I want to put several campers inside. I am wanting a big picture window. I have not seen any kind of window frame that will work. Secondly, if I get a window that works I want to put a light inside that wont bleed thru the plastic. Any sugestions from other in the RR hobby would be appreciated.”

One Response to Lighting a Building On A RR Layout

    Jim,
Paint the inside walls of your building black – the light won’t leach thru’. 2ndly – use mini-strip LED’s. J-Car sell them. You buy them in strips of 3, 6, 9, etc. They have an adhesive backing and are readily connected. The resistors are all in place – just conect to a 8 – 15v power supply. The LED’s come in soft, bright and other colors, excellent for building & carriage lighting.
By the way, everyone says that LED’s have to run off DC power. Rubbish! They work just as well on AC. You can detect a flickering from peripheral vision, only briefly I may add, but this adds to the realism.
I’m not sure what you are trying to achieve with your show window, but if you can’t find a proprietary line, make one yourself fom strip styrene readily purchased thru’ your hobby store.
    Hope this helps
    Regards

    Ian
