Track And Structure Placement

Would someone like to help Jim:

“Talking with different people there seems to be variations as to layout and dimensions for buildings and other structures in proximity to the track as far as closeness. In other words how far is a rail station, loading platform, etc. from the tracks. Can someone give me some guidelines?”

hi this is john just thought id give you some suggestions on your question of placement of structures. my suggestion is just to try differant things until you obtain the look you want im sure there are folks out there that have formuls and math equasions to tell you what the exact method is but for me its this place the buildings you have such as loading docks or train stations close enough to the track where they will not obstruck the free movenment of trains place a passenger car on the track in front of the station and look and see if in a prototypical situation if the passengers can board and exit the car easily without jumping or streaching to far. put yourself as a passenger boarding. the same with loading docks and frieght staions place a box car with the doors open along side the platform and see if the workers can enter and exit the car easily if you see that they can its in the right spot just use you eye and imagination your see it will look great and if for some reason you can get the track close as you want it remember you can always use ramps from the loading platform to the car….good luck im sure youll do great….j

ive been into model railroading for some time now long before the dcc and computer enhanced software ever came into being. and i have found that although these are invalueable resourses for ideas and methods i still find the old saying keep it simple, to be the best idea yet whats wrong with eyeing a structure up so that it looks good where its at without having a computer telling you thats where it should go. or whats wrong with throwing a switch by hand to get that car into the siding. whats happening to our imaginations? can we do anything anymore witout the help of a computer or a electronic chip telling us where and when to do it? a layout used to be a reflection of ones own ideas and imagination a lot of hard work to produce a work of art done by our own hands without the impersonality of a image created by a computer…that being said the dcc systems and computer software nowadays are again a invalueable source of information i would never even begin to argue about that however i cant stop reflecting and remembering all the great layouts ive seen in my lifetime that where build by the greatest computer ever made the human mind and imagination.
