Shortage Of Space For HO Layout
Carl has a small space for his HO layout and asks readers:
“My HO train radius layout is too small for a 1960’s aluminum passenger train set which I cherish. I run it very slowly to avoid derailments. I can’t enlarge the train table. Can anything be done to improve the situation? Someone please help?”

Don’t know if this will help, and not knowing the space layout you’re currently working with…however, here’s a few options that may work, or that you can expand on.
If you can’t expand out, move up!For a separate operation, make a 2-story layout using 3/4″ plywood and 1″ dowels. Lay track on the plywood and run an engine with some cars to ensure smooth running. Trace the layout & cut out. Measure the tallest item you have on the 1st level to ensure clearance, and cut each dowel accordingly. Attach the dowels to the underside of the plywood, ensuring dowel placement supports properly and doesn’t interfere with your 1st level layout. Use brick/rock pliable sheeting/contact paper to cover the dowels. Paint the plywood black/brown, decorate with ballast, bushes, bridges, etc.
This can be done simply with a figure 8 shape, made wider in specific spots to add small mountain tunnels, bridges, or whatever. Use your imagination and play with it before you cut the plywood.
