How To Keep Tracks Clean

Marty has a question on a subject that is widely covered in the Model Train Help Ebook and asks readers to add feedback on his problem:

“Can some answer what is the best solvent to keep tracks clean? How do you keep your rails clean? My layout is in my garage. What solvent should I use and what to use to put it on with? Thanks Marty”

Marty, I used cleaning cars for quite a while, the ones with the drag pad..They do ok but you need to clean the pad quite often…Alcohol is my go to cleaner for close areas and some smaller yards, I use a old T shirt, and two fingers, one on each rail,as the area gets dirty I just move to a clean area on the rag, keep the cleaning area wet with alcohol…The very best cleaning I have ever found is by getting a CMX cleaning machine, a brass unit that holds liguid, it has a filler tube and a drip valve….I use lacquer thinner, high strength in the unit and follow the instructions. The thinner eveporates at a good rate and the cleaner really works, the rails so clean you cannot rub any black off at all with your fingers. You need to wipe the cleaning pad as grim shows up, but with the wet pad a paper towel does this quickly…I have tried other things to clean, WD 40, GooGone, both work but I like the evaporation, as with alchol and the thinner….Herb Sr

I use 90% isoprophyl alcohol available from the local drugstore and foam pads that are used for applying and cleaning off makeup.
