Which Transformers To Use?

If you have years of experience working on, or operating, a model railroad layout then it would be good if you could share your talents and experience with others who desperately need help and encouragement.

Here is an example. Cameron is a newbie to the hobby and asks:

“Can transformers for HO be used to power N gauge layouts, or must they say HO,N,O etc. on them?”

    There are two factors that need to be considered for transformeers for Model Railroad Layouts. Voltage and Amperage. Most locomotives in HO & N scale are 12 volt. Modern locomotives draw from about .75 to 1.5 amps per locomotive. An HO transformer should work well on an N scale layout. The limiting factor is amperage. Use a large enough transformer to safely power all the locomotives you plan to run at once.
