DCC & Magnetic Couplers

Rob has a question on DCC operation which is all explained in simple terms in my Model Train Help ebook. The extended chapter also covers the advantages and disadvantages of DC verses DCC operation. Rob asks:

"I have been quite a few years since I operated model trains. Starting a new model completely from scratch. My question is, what exactly is Digital Command Control and Decoder? How does it work and what does it control? I also have a question about Magnetic couplers for trains and cars. How does this work, and where exactly on the track would the magnets be placed?"

    Rob,

I can’t address your question regarding DCC operation but if you go to this web address:

    http://www.nmra.org/beginner/couplers.html

you should have all your coupler questions answered. I’m sure if you poke around on the NMRA web page which is associated with the link I provided above, you should also find some info on DCC operations.

    Hope this helps,

    Geof

Rob,most and foremost, you need someone in your area to help you with DCC..,its quite complex and takes a while to learn…Roberts book could help in a big way…DCc is a system that can run many engines on the same layout at the same time…A decoder is mounted in every engine and has its own address, ( engine number)the throttle controls everything..The magnetic couplers are mounted on the engines and all cars, they can be uncoupled using a flat magnet sold at most hobbie shops (train). The magnet sets on the track between the rails, place them whereever you need them, I only use HO Kadee couplers, the best. Again Roberts book can be your bible. Herb Sr
