HO/N Small layout

Richards asks for help from readers:

“I am interested in building a small layout for my grandchildren to enjoy. When I say small I am thinking in the range of 3′ x 6′,that will probably be wall mounted to save space and 3′ deep so I can reach all parts of the layout. I currently have both HO and N scale engines that I have found at garage sales. Has anyone got any ideas?”

Hi Richard, First how old are your grand children? If they are between the ages of 8 to 10 or older you (MAYBE) safe with the N scale. A 3′ x 6′ layout in N scale can be real nice with a lot of activity on it. If you decide on HO you will be limited a little but will be able to do some things unless you go to at least a (4′) x 6′ layout. Do yourself a favor and go to Atlas.com and check out there layouts in both scales you might be surprised at what you will be able to do in both scales. Be careful though this can become an obsession and before long you will have a huge layout no matter what scale you decide to model in. Tony P

Hi Richard, If you go with HO try a 4′ x 6′ or 4′ x 8′. with 4” wide you can run loops which I think you grand kid would like. Also with a 4’table style if you have room you can reach in from both sides.
