Upper Level Double Track Clearance

“I want to put on my HO layout a double track upper level. My question is; what is the distance from the lower board to the bottom of the upper board, for clearance of trains running under the board.”

It depends. If the lower level is just staging, you need to get your arm in, so about 7-8″ will work. Otherwise, about 18″ will handle some decent scenery. I’d go for at least that, but also merge the two levels with a mountain scene. See modelrailroader.com for track plans.
on the hight of an upper level i have found that the easyest way is
to measure the hight of a tunnel portol not the opening but the
overall hight, this should be your
minimum hieght. this works for
any scale
I’ve made my double level 22″ apart with the bottom deck at 22″ and the top one at 44 1/2″. Both levels are the same width and I have left room all the way around so I can get to everything. I am building a helix to move from one level to the next.
