I have found, in attempting to convert “old” locos, those which are not DCC ready, to DCC is whether you are able to completely isolate the motor, i.e. that it does not touch any other metal part of the loco. If the 4-8-2’s motor can be isolated then it is possible to instal a decoder. Whether there is space for the decoder in the loco itself, is another matter.
