I have just recently done exactly what you are doing. I had a Kato SD70mac that I put the 1644 decoder in and I am using the NCE power cab for DCC operation. It is very painless and works right out of the box. The 1644 has plenty of options you can change but it sounds really good right out of the box. The only change I made was the horn from a 4 to 7. I can't speak to the Atlas engines as I only have the one Kato.
