Voltage and Amperage. Most locomotives in HO & N scale are 12 volt. Modern locomotives draw from about .75 to 1.5 amps per locomotive. An HO transformer should work well on an N scale layout. The limiting factor is amperage. Use a large enough transformer to safely power all the locomotives you plan to run at once.
