To Phil - remotes such as Legacy or TMCC only work with locomotives equipped with the proper receivers inside. Your 28044 can be upgraded to Legacy/TMCC by adding the plug in board inside the locomotive. The TMCC can usually be found for sale on e-bay. MTH trains use an entirely different system, but also need to be equipped for it. As for power, each track should have at least 75-80 watts of power going to them. Bridging another lock on halfway around the track would be helpful. Use minimum 18 gauge wire. As for sluggishness of the trains, check for animal hairs that may have gotten into the running gear of each locomotive. Also, using a large INK eraser, try cleaning the track all the way around. Oxidation can form on the tracks, and this is the best way to clean that off without damaging the track.
To Larry - If you can go bigger, do so. You'll be happier in the long run. I assume you are making a year round layout, so 4x8 will be a disappointment soon after you finish it.

Looking for some layout help. This will be my first actual build. What is the recommended size for O scale? Is 4 x 8 really enough? Have room to go larger. Appreciate the help.
