Ted. This has been a common problem with some models. From what I have understood about the axle gears, they were made to fit the axle to tight and after time, and use they crack, then just spin and do make some noise. Walthers does carry the replacement axle sets. I do not have the part number, but you can call Terminal Hobbies in Milwaukee and they will assist you. Also if you feel good enough at it, NWSL does offer a replacement Axle Gear, that is of high quality. I have been told you can use the Ahtearn Axle Gear too. But I have never tried that yet. I get what I can from Walthers, then if they are not available, I go to NWSL for their gear.

I found my Operating Instructions for the Proto 2000 GP Series and the illustrated Parts Breakdown showed me the four screws that hold the weight to the frame. One at each end and two under the fuel tank. Then all I had to do was unsolder the two pickups and be careful with the orange motor wire.
The problem was that the drive U Joint fitting over the gear was cracked. Walthers does not have that part any longer and claim it is not a problem. They suggested buying old loco’s for parts. I super glued the thing to its shaft and cleaned the worm gear and other gears which were sticky. I wish I would have put a piece of heat shrink over the fitting prior to glueing it. I also bought some Atheran axel gears to replace the broken Proto gears which are a problem. Should run fine now.
