Years ago, in my wood shop I stopped using any type of screw except the square head (Robinson) screws. I have carried this into my train layout also. They are just easier to use.

Usually,I get my screws from McFeely's (McFeelys.com). However, the track plus the foam mat under by O gauge track required a 3/4" screw, which McFeely's did not have. I was able to order the square head screws from Fasenall.

Never nail or glue down track. If you are like me, I like to change layout design to keep improving the layout.

I have used flat head screws of this type (size) and love them. I am HO scale so I have a little more room on my ties. I use an 1/8th inch bit and hand clear a counter sink in the middle of the tie and then dirve the screw. I often predrill the holes if I'm going into wood very far and It doesn't hurt to put the smallest amount of dish soap on the threads to help drive them and to prevent breaking them off since they are so thin.
