My layout is like a shelf that is around the walls of the room. the hill where the tunnel is has a flat wall that is facing the walkway and in this wall I have fitted a door just big enough to get my hand into reach the track. I use this door to clean the track but so far I have not had a derailment, not to say that it will never happen. I run my trains at a slow scale speed to keep everything on track. Inside the tunnel I do not have ballast on the track just enough at each end to make it look right. The tunnel is about a meter and a half long and includes curves and has two tracks about 300mm apart..
