I am not familiar with Lionel, but a basic possible problem: This looks like a big loco, and it may require a larger power supply and controller. If your power supply and controller are only intended for a small loco, they may overheat and cut-out after a short while, which is exactly the symptom you describe.

Get a a 12V car tester (or a 12V bulb with two wires) to check if there is power to the track.
Make sure the track and electrical pick-up wheels are clean.

I bought a set at a garage sale last year that the guy could not get to run. He even rock it to a dealer who could not figure why it did not run. I took it home and cleaned the wheels on the engine and cleaned the track good and never had problem running it.

One possibility might be looseness in power connectors.

Another may be a break in the wire.

I suggest doing a voltmeter check at all parts. Power pack, wies, track, connectors. Another is, with power removed, checking the continuity of the tracks, the connectors to the power pack.

I agree with Matt that the problem may reside with the controller.

A thought, check the surface on which the tracks rest upon for possible interference.

You might want to consider an exchange with the dealer for another set to see if it works, considering it is new.
