I would not recommend Hornby decoders to anyone My mate had them and had no end of trouble with them He runs an NCE system and as soon as we changed the decoders to NMRA compliant all the trouble left so we installed Digi tracks and Tsunami 2 with sound.

Without any doubt the best DCC decoders are Zimo, whether it is their basic decoder or the their all singing sound and multi function decoders. My extensive fleet of steam OO guage locos (and a few diesels) all have Zimo decoders most fitted with the MX649R sound decoders. The range of functions and sounds is excellent and their performance is also excellent.

Bear in mind that the decoders you buy must be NMRA compatible otherwise you could have problems. I have a mix of LENZ, Digitrax and TCS decoders and have no problems.
I only have 3 locos with sound decoders.

Depends entirely on what you want to do. Just run a train on DCC - they all do that so go for the least expensive. Want lights, sound, auto coupling? the prices escalate. Want them for HO but the space is limited - most so called N scale decoders can handle the average workload of small HO locos if the train and grades are prototypical. Do your own research with the manufacturers and local hobby shop because they know their product, and only you really know what it is you want to acheive. Good luck.
