Hi I go onto e-bay and look for small recordable greeting card inserts.
They come in different recording lengths.
Then I use google to get the sounds I want and record them onto the little device.
There are two buttons on the device one for recording and one for play, I also use a toilet roll inner as a sound drum, the speaker fits neatly inside of it and greatly amplifies the sound.
I hope this helps.

You can visit Innovative Train Technology Products (ittproducts.com). They have a large selection of sound modules. You can listen to a sample of any that interest you. You can set them up with a push button for single play or toggle switch for continuous play. The do require a 9 to 14 volt dc power supply.

There are stand alone systems out there. I use 2 that I found on eBay.com that I am incorporating into/onto my layout. They are: 'Sound Master 210' and 'MRC Symphony 77', they both have easy controls (push button type) that hook up to speakers where ever you put them and both have a lot of different sounds available and there are more varieties of systems. Hope this helps to get started. My Great Grand Kids love them. J
