Loco Speeds For Consists

Jamie is into N scale and posted this question:

“Is there a decoder that can regulate the speed of a loco in a consist? I only have two engines… an Atlas and a Kato… but the speeds don’t match well. I don’t want to risk damaging them. Any suggestions?”

    Jamie,
That is the beauty of DCC. Every motive decoder I have seen has the ability to speed control the locomotive that it is installed in. The trick is to get two different locomotives to emulate the same speed curve. This is not as difficult as it sounds. You can do it by using just 3 CV’s numbers 2, 5, and 6 but if there is a large discrepancy between the two locos you may have to program a custom speed table for each loco. Refer to the decoders manual for the way to do this. There are numerous videos online showing how this is done.

I always use Plywood, it can be stained or painted and easy to cut with a Jigsaw .
I hope this is what you meant

Typically, newer DCC equipped models will play out the sound of the train s prime mover, horn or whistle, and bell. Many will also go further by including startup and shutdown sequences, crew radio conversations, coupling and uncoupling, dynamic braking, and even rail and flange sounds! If your layout is set up for DCC operation, there’s nothing you’ll need to do to get these to work. Just program the locomotive and activate the sounds as desired!
