Generally, unless you want two separate layouts, you would have one main system, your “command station”, but you can have more than one handheld controller plugged into the system.

Since you are expanding your layout, you need to consider the power output and wiring. With longer runs, you need thicker wires for the main bus. You don’t necessarily need more power from your system unless you are going to be running more locomotives at the same time. Just having a bigger layout doesn’t mean more locomotives running at once. There’s a limit to how much multi-tasking anyone can do! But if you do intend to have more running, then you may need to increase the power.
