Why not ask the Triang Society. The author is very knowledgable and I'm sure would give advice and contacts. Just put Triang Society in your search engine (the IT one).

Hope this helps

Hi keith,
Thanks for your reply is it possible to repair the existing heater X549, I have tried with no success, I believe you need a very thin wire with a total resistance of 30 ohms, and I am not sure how it is constructed, ie in a straight line or wound around the old fuse heater, is it possible I can purchase the new heaters you refer too on line.are the new seuthe made in china, as I have read article which say they melt the new engine chimneys, however the old triang seem to be able to cope, I do have an old seuthe funnel which is not working, would this be of any good, I did enquire at a local hornby train shop and they did seem to have any seuthe smoke heaters.in stock,
I am hoping that someone can find where I can purchase the old x549, last made in 1974--ha-ha
Kind Regards John,

Hello John. Depending on how handy you are you could remove the old smoke units and put new ones in. You can buy them from good model shops and their not too expensive. The new seuthe' s are a lot easier to install than the old Triangs. The ones I buy have two wires that you solder onto the positive and negative sides of the motor. The actual heater that you call it goes into the funnel or you can make the heater the funnel if your clever enough. If you decide to go this way I would suggest that you take your engines with you to the shop to get the correct size. Yes they come in different sizes. Well once again good luck.
