    It depends on several things. Manufacturer of the model, prototype locomotive and the RR themselves. Many old Athearn blue box engines had 42″ wheels. Most 1st and 2nd generation engines had 40″ wheels. EMD E units had 36″ while Alco PA’s had 40″. From 3rd generation onward most are 42″ or larger.

    You must meassure the diameter of the wheel, not the flange, and the diameter of the axis.
