Kato 22-018 and 22-018 Power Packs for HO and N scale?

Allen P asks:

“Kato is said to sell power packs that are for both HO and N scale. I find that a bit far fetched??? The model number 22-014. I also saw one with the number 22-018, so I’m a bit confused?”

Many powerpacks are for HO and N, and it means they have enough power output for HO locomotives while at the same time not too much for N scale. If you look at any manufacturer’s website, you’ll see powerpacks rated for HO and N.

I’m not familiar with Kato power packs, but looking on the internet tells me that the 22-014 has been discontinued and the 22-018 is it’s replacement.

The actual power pack is separate from the controller unit, available as either 12v or 16v output.

Regular DC trains in HO & N both run at (up to) 12V. The power taken depends on the motor in the loco, and the load the loco is pulling.

So any regular 12V DC powerpack / controller for HO will also work for N scale.

And a powerpack for HO that runs one HO train will run several N scale trains (through separate controllers).
