Opinions on Instant Roadbed Please

Ami Instant RoadbedRyan has this question:

“I was told about a product called Instant Roadbed, and wondered if it is any good? No glue is needed as it has self adhesive backing, but I was wondering how long this would last? I was told you just lay track and ballast on top and that both can be removed if needed without wrecking things. This sounds good, but I question if the the Instant Roadbed tape might start lifting over time? It does interest me because it sounds easy and less messy and quicker than other methods, but I don’t want to lay my track and ballast with the stuff only to regret it. I guess I could use it for making roads, and sidewalks too? Has anyone used it with success or otherwise?”

I’ve not used it however, I’ve not heard anything good from those who have. Your base must be clean, no dust, dirt powder. If it is like the self adhesive roads yuck. good luck

PECO do something of the sort to fit their own track in British 00 Gauge & N Gauge. Some say it crumbles after a few years, others have 20 or 25 year old track that has given no problems; maybe ultra-violet light is the problem. Most people who express a preference seem to like thin cork sheet cut to width and stuck with wood glue before or while being ballasted.

IT SOUNDS GREAT IF IT CAN STICK TO RAW WOOD, IF 3M USES THE GLUE IT WONT STICK TO RAW WOOD.

I’ve used this stuff for a few years and it works pretty well, however it doesn’t work with Bachmann EZ track

works good you can also use it for ashphalt road beds

I used this once on a layout I was helping a kid set up, it picks up every speck of dust etc. so won’t use it again. You have to put it down exactly where you want it as it will not lift properly to be used again we left the backing sheet on and pulled it off as we laid the trackbed. Cork is easier with PVA glue
