Hornby R8072 Point Problem

On which track out of the point do you have the power attached ?
It should normally be on the toe of the point, other wise it will be cut off when the point is switched the other way.

Yes, you lost power on the track.
From your description it seems if you are using DCC then the overrun capacitor, part of the DCC setup, is providing just enough power to the loco. Franks comment should be investigated further. If you are using DC then the power drop off could be attributed to the connection between the moveable track and its electrical contact to the turnout section.. Whichever is the method of control DCC or DC then the track connections will be the answer.
Purchase the following to ensure equal voltage across each point exit;
Hornby R8232 Digital Electric Point Track Clip (Pack of 20)

The switch blade is not picking up current sufficiently to drive your Loco, there is a small tab of metal on the blade which must come into contact with the live rail to get smooth running.
