Discoloration of Atlas Switch Center Rail

Kerry writes:

“On my O gauge layout I noticed the center rail of the Atlas switch is discolored. The track on either side is ok. Any idea what causes this? I have six switches and they all exhibit this?”

I’m not familiar with third rails, however I would suggest that rail is the main feed for power and the outside rails share the negative.

  • Frank B says:

Are you running 3 rail or 2 rail ?

Over what period has this happened ?

Can you add a picture to show us the colour and position of the discoloration ?

  • Morgan Bilbo says:

Wow! What happens to the tops when you really clean the rails? That’s where the electricity must flow. The sides and such can be painted and made to look the same. This may help. But if after cleaning, the rail tops still look different, you have no choice but to leave them the same. ? Unless you can find some paint that conducts electricity to paint the tops of all 3 rails.
