Flashing LED Lights On Train Layout

A reader asks:

“I went to a train show this year at the NY state fairgrounds in Syracuse this past November. I saw an item that caught my eye. On someone’s display there was a figure that looked like he was arc welding on a locomotive. To simulate the welders arc, a white flashing LED was used. Thought this was neat. I purchased a flashing LED from Radio Shack, think this would work. It would have only the clear LED would flash red. Does someone know of a circuit that I could purchase or fabricate that would make a white LED flash? Thanks for any help your readers might give me.”

Walthers.com has an electronic arc welder circuit. http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/296-1013
    Hope this helps.

Just off the top of my head What if you got a mobile engine decoder with the different light effects in it and not hook up the wires to the motor. If this does not work for then you have a extra decoder for testing or install in a engine.I would suggest that you get one of the smaller size ones (Physical Size) so you can fit it into anything ~Alan C.

Evans Design makes that Arc Welder set up you are looking for, It comes in two sizes and works great. Life is about 100,000 hours according to their advertising. You can find it at:
    http://www.ModelTrainSoftware.com

I have one of their setups and they work great.

If you can wait a day or so, I can find a website I use that sells all kinds of LED’s. I bought several different kinds to use in my train layout and on landing pads for our miniature RC helicopters. I was surprised to see the white LED’s flash red, but i think they sell White’s that flash. The best part is that the “circuit” is “in” the LED. All I have to do is hook up 3 AA batteries in series to the LED and it works. Never use a 9 volt! Get you that sight asap. I use a non-flashing white LED for my Lionel engine and it really blasts away the dark!!! Russell

I discovered a solution in a local UK Pound store (US Dollar Store?). I saw a toy that when you shook it it flashed blue white and red. Cutting the toy apart I found in it a small electronic module in a plastic ball – curring the ball off the module I found that the flashing was triggered by a sping closing a circuit. Attaching a push button to the spring and the circuit board meant that whenever I pressed the push button momentarily the LEDs flashed for several seconds. You will need to mount the electronics so that the red LED is masked but the Blue/White LED shows – a welding shop for about $2.00!

Found the website/company that sells specialized LED’s (and much more). It is “All Electronics” http://www.allelectronics.com For less than $1 each, I bought “Super Bright” red, white and blue and red and white flashers, although the “clear” LED’s flashed red when connected – ask them about white flashers for your welding effect. Remember to keep the voltage and current within acceptable ranges and observe polarity – LED’s have a flat side and/or a short lead to indicate the negative side. Hope this helps!

Go to http://www.modeltrainsoftware.com/. They have a LED set that simulates the welders arc.

Micro Magic Studios makes a 2 bulb fire simulation “black box” that can be adjusted for effect from a small bonfire to a house on fire effect. I bought one and really like its action. I’m sure they could put one together with bright white (rather than the red/yellow LEDs used for the fire simulation. The two tiny bulbs provide the flicker effect far better than one could do. Send them an email and ask. [email protected] is their address and they are in Ontario but shipping was cheap due to the light weight.
