Getting Started In DCC

Ed has a question for readers:

“I am looking for some help in choosing a power pack to start my model railroad.  I have seen all of the features and eventually want to go to DCC and hand held but not now.  So can someone suggest a reasonably priced power pack that will allow growth?”

which ever one you choose. depends on just how far you will ever go with your layout. digitrax and nce allow many add on features, that you will like. i own nce and like it very much. i have access to a digitrax layout this is able to be run from the computer. but these features cost $$$$$$$. good luck on what ever you choose

I recently had to make the same decision Ed. After much research, I decided to go with the inexpensive digitrax Zepher. You can use this unut as is or you can add many other available power units to it. My cost for this unit was only around the $200 mark. Later if you like you can expand to use it with your computer. You can use it as it is or add a walk around cab.

Before you decide, look around for any railroad groups in your area. I went to four different groups that have four systems before I made my choice. They all have good points and some bad ones. Become familiar with the different types, then make the big choice.

If I understand your question, you are asking if you can purchase a power supply for DC that can be used as well with DCC. DCC power supplies have a higher amperage than DC power supplies because power is on the tracks all the time. DC does not require the high amperage that DCC demands. It is very unlikely that you find a power supply that works for both DC and DCC. Buy the best DC poer supply for your DC layout, and then choose the best power supply for your DCC layout.
