Making Streets and Roads

If you have made streets and roads for your rr layout you might like to share your ideas with Tom who asks:

“What materials are out there for making city streets and roads. I have tried various methods including matte board and plaster of paris, neither of which look realistic?”

Walthers make a street & kerbing kit, however, I have had good results using masonite board cut to size & using the “B” side of the material. I camfer the shoulders and then spray paint to choice color and further highlight with pastels. Glue to layout. It simulates a very good bituminised road. Using the “A” side and scoring expansion joints simulates concrete carriageways. Also scoring irregular cracks, patching, placing man-holes etc further enhances & highlights the roadway. Kerbing can be similarly created.
