Building Mountains and Rocky Terrains

John has a question for you on using styrofoam to create scenery and asks:

“I will be building mountains and rocky terrains. In the pass I used the cardboard strip, plaster cloth and hydrocal method. Also used scultamould for final touches. But I’m reading that styrofoam can be used to create realistic scenery. Has anyone got any suggestions? Thanks John.”

One Response to Building Mountains and Rocky Terrains

    Hello John,
I am in the process of building my 3rd layout in HO. I am using styrofoam to build all my mountains and scenery. For me, it’s real easy to shape the terrain. Use the foam that doesn’t “bead” apart. The better stuff is available at most craft supply stores. It’s somewhat flexible and doesn’t “snap” apart. I then cover the foam with plaster cloth. It works for me.

    Good Luck!
