    Not sure if you are referring to the benchwork or the basic roadbed. There are a lot of thoughts out there about building roadbed. You can cut subroadbed out of plywood, make it out of wood splines, use extruded foam insulation, etc.
    Kalmbach has a good book on benchwork. I’ve used both extruded foam for roadbed and cork. A lot of folks use homasote. Beware that homasote creates incredible dust!
    On my layout, I built the sub-bed out of plywood, then layed a 3/4″ layer of extruded foam (for quiet) then made the roadbed from cork roadbed.
