Train Table

Bob asks readers:
I am trying to put together a train layout and I have lots of S scale train stuff. My question is Is there anything I should put down on the plywood before making my layout? It's about 14' by 18'.

I added a layer of cork to my 4×8 layout. I glued it down to the MDF base with contact cement. A tricky job but totally effective. The cork deadens all of that echo that comes from track on bare wood.

I laid a layer of 2″ insulating foam sheet on top of my layout, then laid cork roadbed. The foam really deadens the sound so the sound system in the locomotive sounds much better. It also makes carving terrain much easier, especially the ditches and gullies.
