Steam Engines in South Africa

Geoff sent in these photos to share:

Your readers may be interested in the pictures (sent by my brother) taken in Pietermaritzburg (50 miles inland from Durban, South Africa) altitude 2500 ft. The gauge is 3’6” to accommodate the hilly country. The line runs to Johannesburg (6000 feet) so the engines were big.

I am not sure when they were taken but probably in the late 1960’s early 1970s.

great pictures would love to see more. I own a Garret Model of that type and love to see pictures of these machines appreciated. Jürgen from Germany.

  • Neil says:

Juergen, HO models of Garratt locomotives are rare and difficult to come by. Which one do you have?

  • Graham Tomkins says:

I too love Garratts. I especially like the small ones. I think one of the earliest ones was made for an Australian railway and was either an 0-4+4-0 or 0-6+6-0. Is a model available of this one in HO standard gauge with NMRA approved wheel flanges? I “need” one.
    Thanx,
