depends on the manufacturer. some are easier than others

Blue box locomotives from Athearn are not to hard to convert to dcc, there are many video s on youtube to help you along, Also some makes of other manufacturs cheers

Amount of work varies with manufacturer and age of the model.If you have never done a conversion find someone to show you what is involved (you will likely have to pay for the first one). If after seeing what is involved you are comfortable doing the rest of your roster go for it.
Once a loco has been upgraded to DCC it can be run on any DCC system.

i found it very easy to convert dc to dcc ,four wires mainly
