Nightmare Wiring Switches

A question for readers from Phillip in Chatswood, Sydney, Australia:

“My single track layout will be laid out over 2m by 3m. I’ve never wired switches but read up about it a bit and want to know the pitfalls to avoid in advance. Much appreciated for letting me post this.”

  • Geoff says:

Are you talking about turnouts or on/off switches? (who was it who said something using the same language but a different vocabulary?)

  • Phillip says:

Sorry Geoff, I am confusing myself with all the stuff I’ve been reading. I’m hopeless at techie stuff. I want to wire in the switches.

  • phil johnson says:

assuming you are talking switch motors. are you using twin coil, slow motion or the machines attached to the turnout?

  • David Stokes says:

Watch video tutorials on wiring switches (turnouts), I recommend you watch a couple of them.

As always, read the literature. Peco electrofrog and Insulfrogs now have a new sibling – haven’t tried one yet but they might be worth a go.

  • Stan says:

Peco Unifrog will be best for Nubia.

  • Geoff says:

Which manufacturer’s track are you using? Maybe consider one that has motorized switches. They don’t look as good but the wiring is almost “plug ‘n play”.
