Problem With American Flyer Front Trucks

Daryl models S scale and would like some advice please:

“I have American Flyer from 1947 Steam locomotive. The front trucks continue to jump the tracks. This just started recently. “

  • Jerry says:

Did the front truck have a spring that might be missing that would put pressure to hold the truck on the track?

    Did the wheel spacing change?

    Do the wheels spin freely?

Were the tracks nailed down or possibly shifted?

Does it happen at the same spot every time?

    • Daryl D Dungey says:

The truck has a spring. I wondered if it is to weak. It had been working on this track. It comes off several places in the curve. The wheels move easy.

  • Frank B says:

Or is this a case of old wide flange wheels on modern finer scale rack ?

If so, it may be possible to change the wheels, or file down the flanges.
(A small lathe will help here, but is not essential.)
